Buddha Mountain, also known as Khao Chi Chan, is a mountain in Pattaya known for the huge Buddha image sculpted on the mountain cliff. The sculpture was developed in conjunction with the Golden Jubilee of His Majesty King Bhumibol in 1996.
Officially named “Phra Phuttha Maha Wachira Uttamopat Satsada”, the Buddha sculpture is a combination of Lanna and Sukhothai arts. The sculpture is 109 meters tall and 70 meters wide, making it clearly visible from far.
Development and sculpting of the Buddha image required a lot of meticulous, painstaking efforts. First, the image was designed to perfection with the help of computer software. After that, sculpting of the Buddha image was done during night time using laser technology, as laser is only visible at night. This was followed by filling the laser-drawn image with gold leaves.
In front of the Buddha sculpture, you will see an open pavilion with stone garden, pools and lotus flowers. Together with the Buddha sculpture and surrounding greenery, the area makes people feel peace in the heart. Visitors however are not allowed to enter the pavilion, as there might be falling stones from the mountain.
