On the 31st of August 1957, Tunku Abdul Rahman declared independence for the state of Malaya. The new born nation then went on to form Malaysia when it joined with the eastern states and Singapore. Today, Malaysia is advanced beyond those years to become an economically strong nation, advanced and developed without leaving the principles of unity. Diversity doesn’t get any wider than what you find in Malaysia today.
Merdeka square – the place which holds a great deal of significance to every Malaysian is a great place to be to truly understand the essence of the nation. Come and see for yourself, the place where Tunku Abdul Rahman declared independence of the nation.
It was in this square that in 1957, the Union Jack flag was lowered and the Malaysian flag was raised in its place; the moment where every Malaysian can treasure till this day. It is the venue for the annual Merdeka Parade. So, it would be best to come here during the National Day season. When you arrive at the square, you will see the magnificent Sultan Abdul Samad building which housed the Selangor State Secretariat. It then later became the Supreme Court before being left abandoned for many years. Today, this magnificent building houses the Ministry of Heritage, Culture and Arts.
On the southern end of the field, stands a 95-meter flagpole; something that is surely hard to miss. It is the tallest flag pole in the world. At the square you have the opportunity of standing before the very pole that was used to proudly hoist the Malaysian flag for the very first time that faithful day when Tunku Abdul Rahman declared independence for the nation! Merdeka square is also a good venue for various concerts and carnivals. On certain days, the colonial days are relived when the square is turned into a cricket field.
Head underground for food and leisure. The Actors Club is situated underground too, at the Plaza Putra. You could also take a walk to the National History Museum nearby. Go see for yourself, the impressive collections that are on display that relating the prehistoric and megalithic ages, from the Malacca sultanate to the colonial era. This museum is certainly the perfect place to delve into the history of the nation; and what a great location to do so!
August 31 every year is the best time of the year to be in Merdeka Square. There is nothing better than celebrating with the local, the national day. Do come along and join in the fun of the Merdeka Day Parade held in the square.
