Batam is the largest city in the province state of Riau Islands, Indonesia. The city administrative area covers three main islands of Batam, Galang (Barelang), and Rempang, as well as numerous small islands. Batam Island is the main city and industrial zone, while both Galang Island and Rempang Island maintain their rural atmosphere and are connected to Batam Island by a short bridge. Batam is an industrial boomtown, an emerging transport hub, and part of a free trade zone in Indonesia–Malaysia–Singapore Growth Triangle, located 20 km off Singapore’s south coast and also part of the Indonesia–Malaysia–Thailand Growth Triangle. In the last few years, Batam has developed as a popular destination for visitors not only from Malaysia and Singapore but also from other countries in Europe and Asia.
